By

The Falconets, Nigeria’s women’s National U-20 football team, defeated Tanzania 3-2 on Sunday, November 19 2023, to advance to the last round of qualifying for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in 2024.

According to the report, Nigeria defeated Tanzania 2-1 in their second-round, second-leg qualification encounter in Abuja. Janet Akekoromowei and Comfort Folorunsho scored the goals.

The first leg between both teams ended in a 1-1 tie on November 12 at the Azam Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam.

The Falconets gave the supporters something to cheer about during the game at Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

The 2022 World Cup quarter-finalists, who have never missed the World Championship, surrounded the guests as soon as the whistle blew.

However, Opeyemi Ajakaye, a striker for the Old U17 Squad, lacked accuracy, which cost them an early goal.

After 16 minutes, Akekoromowei finally gave Nigeria the lead, rifle-ing home from the edge of the box after a deft ball from Taiwo Afolabi.

5 minutes later, Jamila Mnunduka bundled the ball over the line after goalkeeper Shukura Bakare mishandled an innocent-looking free-kick 35 yards out, bringing the East Africans level.

In the 25th minute, goalkeeper Zulfa Ally Makau parried away defender Shukurat Oladipo’s well-struck 40-yard free kick, which would have given Nigeria the lead.

Ajakaye had another chance in the 33 minutes but could not take it.

At the hour mark, Defender Comfort Folorunsho ended the recent streak of 1-1 ties for Nigeria’s national teams.

The Falconets will now play Burundi in the last qualifying round to select an African representative for the Global Tournament in Colombia the following year.
