Former NBA Chair – Arrest NLC Chairman for Causing Suffering to Nigerians
By
Former NBA Chairman Bello Galadi, has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to detain, look into, and bring charges against Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for causing over 200 million Nigerians to suffer through the labour unions’ nationwide strike.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Galadi stated that while he denounced the attack on the labor leader (Ajaero), he chose to go on strike rather than take legal action to defend his rights and seek damages.
According to the former NBA Chairman, the strike, which could be depicted as self-help, had caused superfluous strain and unnecessary stress to the general public; thus, Ajero should be arrested for his actions.
“I condemn the attack and brutalization of the NLC President in Owerri, Imo State,” he declared. I want the IGP to work harder to find, apprehend, and bring charges against the offenders.
Likewise, I see no connection between the attack on the NLC President and work stoppages. The strike is formal, even though the assault is personal.
“Section 34(1) of the Nigerian Constitution enshrines and defends the NLC president’s fundamental rights. By turning to self-help, the NLC president avoided needless conflict but worsened the people’s suffering rather than using his legal right to enforce his rights and seek damages in court.
Shutting down the entire nation, including courts, hospitals, workplaces, schools, and businesses, due to a single person’s selfish interests is unjustified. An innocent Kebbi guy is made to suffer because of an Imo incident. To penalize more than 200 million Nigerians for the wrongdoing of a small number of people is absurd. Unfairness cannot be made right by unjust action.
“Therefore, the NLC President should be detained, looked into, and charged by the IGP for acts that could jeopardize public order. Galadi, the former NBA Chairman, countered that this becomes necessary to deter other leaders from abusing their offices in the future.”
