According to Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, the 2023 supplemental budget will provide his ministry with approximately N400 billion.

The Ministries of Housing, Agriculture, and the Federal Capital Territory would also receive N100 billion apiece from the budget.

Umahi, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; Ahmed Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing; Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security; Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, and other Service Chiefs appeared before the Senate Committee on Appropriations on Wednesday, November 1 2023, to defend the N2.1 trillion 2023 supplemental budget.

On Tuesday, October 31 2023, before the Senate Committee on Appropriations, which is chaired by Adeola Olamilekan, who represents Ogun West, the ministers defended the supplemental budget.

The N100 billion allocated for the Ministry of Housing in the supplemental budget was defended by Dangiwa, who spoke before the committee, stating that the money “will be spent on the construction of housing estates across the country.”

To build 1,000 dwelling units in each state of the federation, he clarified, the Federal Government has been in touch with the governors of each state to request 50 hectares of land for the estates.

In the urban districts inside each geopolitical zone, an additional 2,000 dwelling units, he claimed, will be erected. To begin building housing estates throughout the federation, we would allocate N50 billion. “Slums in various parts of the country will be developed using the remaining N50 billion,” he added.

In front of the committee, he pledged to demolish every abandoned building in Abuja, complaining that the structures “are now hideouts for criminals within the nation’s capital.”

“We will demolish any abandoned buildings within Federal Captial Territory. Since we’ve discovered that all those buildings are criminal hideouts, we’ll also control them all.

“People go into them to conceal when they commit crimes. I have faith that things will get better. Nonetheless, the minister stated that things would keep getting better in terms of security.
