Clark Advises Tinubu to Call Wike to Order Regarding Rivers Crisis
By
Rivers State’s present political dilemma has prompted elder statesman and Ijaw leader Edwin Clark to call on President Bola Tinubu to step in.
In his plea, Clark primarily calls on Tinubu to counsel and forewarn Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
He made the call in reaction to the State House of Assembly members serving Siminalaye Fubura, the governor, with an impeachment notice.
At a press conference on Monday, October 30 2023, Clark stated that the President should counsel Wike and the security agencies to avoid any catastrophic disaster in the state.
“The reported events in Rivers State over the past 24 hours have deeply concerned me. “I have received credible information that there is an attempt to forcibly remove Rivers State Governor Siminalaye Fubara, who has only been in office for approximately five months,” he declared.
According to Clark, the current situation is intended to unseat the governor, compel Prof. Ngozi Odu, his deputy, to retire, and install the Speaker of the House of Assembly. He said, “Let me tell you clearly, we won’t let that happen.”
He went on, “It appears that there was a plan to destabilize the state last night when the revered chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly was set on fire.
“After the incident, when the governor went to the Assembly Complex to survey the damage, he was met with tear gas and even threats of being shot at.
“We live in a democracy, and the principles of constitutional democracy must be respected by all; we are not in a barbarous state where people can do as they like.”
“The people of the Rivers have endured sufficient political upheavals; the state and the Niger Delta Region, in turn, must not be permitted to regress into their gloomy history. The national economy and the stability of the area would suffer greatly as a result.
