FG Plans to Combat Decline in School Enrollment, Says Minister
By
Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, has disclosed that the Federal Government (FG) plans to gradually eliminate the issue of out-of-school children afflicting the nation gradually.
He said this while praising Umo Éno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for the state’s infrastructure advancements in basic education.
This was stated in a press release that the Government House Press Unit in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, provided to journalists on Sunday, October 29 2023.
While giving a tour of the renovated Christ the King School on Wellington Bassey Way in Uyo, the minister who was in the city for the University of Lagos 1984 Law Class reunion made this observation.
Mamman expressed his admiration for the State Government’s initiative and efforts, characterizing them as fostering a “pleasant atmosphere and incentive to increase school enrollment.”
According to the minister, this aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s goal of stopping the enrollment reduction in schools. However, to achieve this, cooperation between the Federal, State, and Local Governments is required.
He declared, “There is hope for us as a nation because of the cooperative efforts of all the governors, everybody, and the Federal Government.”
“That is our area of focus at the federal level, especially for President Bola Tinubu.” This is the method to make the children who are not in school a matter of history”.
The governor stated earlier that the necessity to increase school children’s willingness and love for learning guided his administration’s decision to focus on basic education.

He called attention to the necessity of state-federal cooperation in reorganizing primary education and healthcare, among other sectors, to benefit the individual states and the nation.
“We appeal to the Federal Government to support our efforts as it has to do with our kids and what they will become. Once more, I want to stress that state and federal governments can work together,” he stated.
To guarantee a comprehensive overhaul of primary education in the state, Eno stated that his goal is to duplicate the model school throughout the 31 Local Government Areas. He also mentioned that teachers’ training will be provided in addition to the model.
He continued by saying that his administration is dedicated to promoting rural development and upgrading healthcare and elementary school infrastructure as a means of achieving this goal.
“I have a strong interest in rural development, but you are aware that the cornerstone is education. There are several risks associated with not having an education. Our goal is not only to construct but also to see what we are capable of. We’ll equip it, train the instructors, and ensure our primary education receives a complete makeover”.
