Justice Wike Advocates Severe Punishment For Sexual Offenders
By
A Judge of the Rivers State High Court and Former First Lady in the state, Justice Eberechi Nyemson Wike has advocated severe punishment for anyone found guilty of defiling a minor.
She said this on Tuesday 24 October, 2023 at the 2nd National Conference of Family Court Judges, Magistrates, and other Family Court Practitioners held in Port Harcourt.
Justice Eberechi was of the view that the current punishment is not severe enough and, that heightening of the punishment will deter sexual offenders from molesting minors. She said, “Society should also step up punishment for people who defile children beyond life imprisonment or a 14-year jail term.”

She further stated that “we should do more. I think we should do something that will be drastic, that will make them think twice before they do that. I cannot think of anything better than having a legislation that whatever part of the body used on a child while defiling the child, that part should be cut off. If it is your finger, if it is your mouth, if it is your private part.” I think men will take it more seriously when you come up with such legislation. I hope a man in the House of Representatives or Senate sponsors a bill like that, Justice Eberechi added.
