Global Fund Allocates $1bn to Aid Nigeria’s TB, Malaria & HIV/AIDS Fight

Global fund, an international organization, has granted approximately $1 billion to support Nigeria’s efforts in combating tuberculosis, malaria, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The organization further stated that the allocated funds would cover a three-year period.

In a statement released on Thursday, Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, cited Dr. Jean-Thomas Nouboussi, the Country Portfolio Manager for Nigeria, who made the remarks during a courtesy visit to George Akume, the SGF. The statement quoted Nouboussi expressing congratulations to Akume on his appointment as the SGF.

He said, “The Global Fund has approved about $1bn for Nigeria as part of its grant to assist the country in the fight against tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS for the next three years – with the implementation plan commencing from January 2024.”

According to Nouboussi, out of roughly 110 countries, Nigeria stands as the highest beneficiary of the Global Fund grants. He further mentioned that the Global Fund collaborates with the Country Coordinating Mechanism to ensure fair distribution of funds among nations affected by tuberculosis, AIDS, and malaria worldwide.

Therefore, he appealed to the SGF for assistance in expediting the implementation of the funds allocated to Nigeria.

In response, the SGF said, “Your intervention in TB and malaria are very much welcome. I also learnt that you also intervened in the prevalence of AIDS, I know it has really gone down, but there are some little signs that it has not yet been completely eliminated, but we are very much on the course.
