2023 Election: Be Like Jonathan and accept defeat, APC beckon Atiku, Obi.
The 2023 Nigerian general election, despite all mixed feelings by the candidates and her supporters saw the emergence of ruling party of All Progressive Congress clinch the victory again. The All Progressives Congress Campaign Council has called on the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party’s to congratulate the All Progressive Congress’ candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in order to accept defeat and acknowledge his emergence as winner of the presidential election.
Dele Alake, the PCC’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategic Communications during a global press conference in Abuja addresses the other parties’ agents’ requests for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to void the election because their parties did not win is not a good way of politicking. This request is followed by further development and demand by the PDP, LP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the INEC National Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to resign his position due to perceived irregularities.
The parties had in a joint press conference on Tuesday alleged that the February 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections were marred with violence, rigging and intimidation of voters.
In the same vein, the PDP vice presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has asked Yakubu in a similar conference The PDP Vice Presidential Ifeanyi Okowa claimed that there was no transparency in the recently concluded elections because the results were not transmitted to polling units and for that reason, the results of Saturday’s elections should be cancelled.
The APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) disclosed that those calling for such illegality is a deterrent the true sense of democracy.
Alake admonish the two candidates to learn from the exemplary leadership of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the spirit of sportsmanship.
In his words, “We call on Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan by conceding defeat. This election has already been won by our candidate, according to the results declared at the collation centres in the state. In 2015, President Jonathan did not wait for INEC to finish collation before he called President Muhammadu Buhari and congratulated him in the true spirit of democracy and sportsmanship”.
“We urge Atiku Abubakar and Obi to follow the same path of honour, instead of attempting to heat the polity via the reckless statements by surrogates. Let Atiku and Obi call Tinubu now.”
