Police in Adamawa State have arrested one cop, Sergeant Aliyu Yusuf over the death of 80-year-old Maryam ‘Yerbure’ Abdullahi.
The late Abdullahi was shot and killed on Thursday, in Yola, the state capital.
She was on Friday buried after the tragic incident, in accordance with Islamic rites.
It was gathered that the policeman shot Abdullahi while attempting to arrest a youth in Doubelli, a suburb in Jimeta-Yola, on Thursday night at 9:45pm.
Yusuf, who was on patrol alongside other policemen attached to the Doubelli police division, had apprehended the young man believed to be related to the deceased at the entrance of their residence but was resisted by locals who demanded an explanation for his arrest.
During the ensuing argument, Sergeant Yusuf allegedly pulled the trigger to disperse the unruly crowds but instead gunned down the octogenarian while another victim, identified as Arfad, sustained gunshot wounds in the chest.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola, while mourning Maryam’s demise on Friday announced the arrest of the killer cop.
This was revealed in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje released via its verified twitter and Facebook pages.
The PPRO, while expressing the condolence of the CP to the family of the deceased, explained that the police commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of CID to take over the investigation and ensure the law takes its course.
