After 7 Months, FG Orders VCs To Re-open Universities

By

The Federal Government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered vice-chancellors to re-open schools and commence academic activities.

This was made known in a letter signed on Monday by the Director of Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi.

The letter which instructed the re-opening of varsities was  addressed to all vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of Federal universities.

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly read.

Recall that the National Industrial Court of Nigeria had ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike last Wednesday after the Federal Government had gone to court to challenge the action of the union.

The union however filed 14 grounds of appeal to challenge the judgement.

ASUU had been on strike since February 14 to press home demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.
