FG Confirms Buying N1.14 billion Worth of Vehicles for Niger, Gives Reasons

The Federal Government on Wednesday confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the purchase of vehicles, worth N1.14 billion to Niger Republic.
This came after Nigerians expressed outrage over the action exposed by an investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, who tweeted that he obtained a document from the Budget Office in Nigeria which showed that the President made the approval for the purchase of the vehicles to the neighbouring country.
The document read in part, “Being release of funds in the sum of N1,145,000,000 to the office of the Accountant General of the Federation IFO Kaura Motors Nig. Limited for supply of 10 numbers Toyota Land Cruiser V8 Vehicles to Republic of Nigeria vide Mr. President approval on page 83 dated 28/02/2022.”

While justifying the decision, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, told journalists after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the donation was to help Niger address its security concerns.
She added that while Nigerians have the right to ask questions, President Buhari, who approved the purchase, also has the right to make his own assessment on situations and act on them accordingly.
“Let me just say that over time, Nigeria has had to support its neighbours, especially the immediate neighbours, to enhance their capacity to secure their countries as it relates to us,” she said while answering questions.
“This is not the first time that Nigeria has assisted Niger Republic, Cameroon or Chad.
“The president makes an assessment as to what is required based on the request of their presidents. Such requests are approved and interventions are provided.
“It is to enhance their capacity to protect their countries, as it relates to security and also to Nigeria.”
The news had sparked outrage among Nigerians, many of who argued that funding a foreign entity should not be the government’s priority amid harsh economic realities.
