Insecurity: Inspector General Inaugurates Committee to Combat Financial Flow

The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, during an event at the IGP Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Friday, inaugurated a committee to combat terrorists’ financial streams. He said the committee would review documents from the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit and provide necessary information for the effective functioning of the Financial Action Task Force in the country.

According to the Police  Force, the committee comprises 21 notable, highly dedicated, and experienced officers of the Nigeria Police Force drawn based on their professionalism and specialisation.

The committee, headed by Adegbite Olaolu, would also provide data on Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Financing Terrorism, and Counter-Proliferation Finance. The IGP explained that this is to determine the level of the nation’s implementation of the strategic modalities emplaced to tackle insecurity and financial crimes in tandem with international best practice, and its report to be submitted within one week

The committee will also work on 22 terms of reference which includes the draft, domestication and implementation of the Standard Operation Procedure on parallel investigation and inter-agency exchange of information. They would provide evidence of inter-agency coordination of money laundering investigations, prosecutions and convictions.  They would as well be expected to give statistics and summary of cases consistent with Nigeria’s risk profile among other things.

The IGP while reiterating the commitment of his administration to tackling the menace of money laundering, terrorism and proliferation of arms financing, enjoined members of the committee to work assiduously towards attaining its mandate.

He, similarly, re-assured Nigerians of better security in the country as all hands were on deck to re-strategise the fight against insecurity in Nigeria.
