Erisco Foods faces renewed backlash

By James Hughes

Indigenous food manufacturer, Erisco foods is facing backlash online.

After facing widespread backlash for its treatment of Chioma Okoli earlier this year, Erisco Foods, an indigenous food manufacturer, has quietly rebranded its tomato purée product to “EFL.”

The controversy erupted when Mrs. Okoli was arrested and put on trial for critiquing the product’s quality on social media. She had complained in a post on Facebook about the sugar content of their Tomato puree.

Subsequently, Erisco had her arrested and sued her for damages, news of which sparked outrage and backlash against the brand.

Nigerians have reacted strongly to this name change, with many expressing disbelief and cynicism towards the company’s actions. Some criticized the company’s handling of the situation, highlighting the unnecessary escalation that led to a PR disaster. Others mocked the company’s initial dismissal of social media criticism, suggesting that changing names indicates a recognition of their missteps, reports Nigeria Bulletin.
