EFCC Detains Emefiele After DSS Released Him
By
Godwin Emefiele, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
A report says that Emefiele, who is being questioned at the Anti-Graft Agency’s National Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, is now being picked up by EFCC agents on Thursday night, 26 October 2023, less than an hour after he was released from the Department of State Services’ prison.
The incident was reported on Friday morning, October 27 2023, when the EFCC was investigating Emefiele for alleged improper behavior while he was the Apex Bank governor.
“Yes, Emefiele is in our (EFCC) custody at the moment. He was taken into custody yesterday night, barely an hour after being released by the DSS. He’s being questioned at the Headquarters right now as part of an investigation into allegations that he embezzled money while serving as the governor of CBN, among other things.”
A statement read that the EFCC might bring further charges against Mr. Emefiele. The EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, was unavailable to provide formal confirmation.
A report says Emefiele was suspended from his position by President Bola Tinubu in June and placed under the care of the Department of State Services (DSS)

After that, he was requested to hand over his duties to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the apex bank’s deputy governor for operations.
The DSS then declared that Emefiele was under arrest for “some investigative reasons” a day later.
He was given N20 million in bail after being charged on July 25 at a Federal High Court in Lagos on two counts related to the “illegal possession” of firearms.
On August 17, the Federal Government retracted the two-count charge, which was dismissed.
However, he was the subject of a new 20-count indictment alleging, among other things, that he conspired to commit procurement fraud.
The arraignment has been postponed twice, and there have been reports that Emefiele has suggested a plea deal with the Federal Government.
Emefiele obliged the proposed arrangement to “disgorge” certain assets and step down as governor of the CBN.
Nevertheless, on September 22, 2023, after Olayemi Cardoso was named the apex bank’s substantive governor, the CBN formally confirmed Emefiele’s resignation.
