Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria ( HURIWA) has formally again called on the Federal Government to secure the release of abducted corps members in Zamfara State

In a statement on Wednesday, 4th October 2023, HURIWA’s Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the NYSC operation would shut down until the detainees were safe.  He said, “It has been over a month since these Corps members were taken down from their families and subordinated to inconceivable torture and trauma by their abductors.

“We’re appalled and outraged by the conspiracy of silence and inactivity by all applicable government officers, including the President, the IGP, the Service Chiefs, the Minister of Youth. “These officers have failed in their indigenous duties to cover Nigerian citizens’ lives and rights, especially corps members. We call on the NYSC to shut down operations, resulting in the survival of these children.

“We’re also notified by the allegations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been negotiating with the terrorists holding the corps members hostage, as reported by some media outlets. Still,  also, it’s a clear treason of trust and a violation of mortal quality, “If these allegations are true.

Negotiating with terrorists isn’t only a sign of weakness and a dangerous priority that will buy further culprits to abduct innocent Nigerians for rescue. “We’re calling on President Tinubu to come out and address the nation on this matter and to explain what he’s doing to secure the release of the NYSC members.

“We’re also calling on the National Assembly to summon the IGP, the Service Chiefs, and the Minister of Youth to regard their places and liabilities in this extremity. “We demand full exposure and transparency from these officers on why they’ve putatively abandoned the abducted members with hardened terrorists.

“We’re prompting the NYSC to suspend its operations until the fraternity stays safe from the kidnappers. “We believe that it’s reckless and asleep to continue transferring youthful Nigerians to serve in insecure and unpredictable areas, which threaten their safety. “We also prompt the NYSC to give acceptable support and compensation to the families of the kidnapped members.

“We’re standing in solidarity with the kidnapped members and soliciting for their safe return. “We’re calling on all Nigerians to join us in demanding justice and responsibility from our leaders. We’ll not rest until our fellow Nigerians are freed from and reunited with their loved bones.

“The kidnapping of Corps Members in Zamfara State is a  public disgrace and a  mortal rights disaster. We will not tolerate any further detention or negligence from our government. “We’ll continue to speak out and fight for the protection of all NYSC members across the country.”

“We will continue to speak out and fight for the protection and welfare of NYSC members across the country.”
