NLC Strike-Kano, Osun Others in Power Blackout

By

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) located on Post Office Road in the metropolitan city was shut down by the National Electricity Workers Union due to the warning strike, on Tuesday morning September 5, 2023.

This complies with the two-day warning strike staged by the Nigeria Labour Congress. It would be recalled that the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) at the end of its meeting on August 31, 2023, agreed to comply with the two-day warning strike.

The union ordered all its members to strictly observe the strike, beginning from Tuesday 5th to Wednesday 6th, September 2023.

The essence of the strike is to protest the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government without due consultation with many major stakeholders.

This is in addition to its refusal to provide proper and effective measures to reduce the biting effects of the economic hardship resulting from the subsidy removal.

The Head of Corporate Communications, KEDCO, Sani Bala, confirmed the development, noting that it is in total compliance with the NLC’s directive.

In his reaction, the Kano State NLC Vice Chairman, Comrade Ado Riruwai, who is championing the enforcement exercise, also confirmed that it has shut down all government offices in the state.

Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees in Osun State also joined the warning strike called by the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress to protest the negative impacts of the removal of fuel subsidy.

The monitoring compliance with the NLC directive in Osogbo observed that some workers of Osogbo Region Transmission Company of Nigeria were locked out of the premises.

Meanwhile, at the Osogbo head office of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, the entrance to the premises was locked and a staff of the company who spoke on condition of anonymity said the workers also joined the warning strike.

Some electricity workers at the Osogbo Region Transmission Company of Nigeria, expressed concerns over the disruption in power supply due to the strike.

They lamented further that the removal of fuel subsidy and the government’s lack of concrete plans to cushion the effects of the removal and ameliorate the hardship it has put many Nigerians in.
