Ex-Gov Okorocha Escapes Deadly Attack,Police Officer Killed

Some unidentified gunmen launched an attack on the convoy of Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of Imo State, resulting in the death of a police officer assigned to him.
During Samuel Anyanwu’s birthday celebration, held in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, on Sunday,19 June,2023,Okorocha disclosed the assault on his convoy. Anyanwu is the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Imo State on November 11.
According to reports, the convoy of the former governor came under attack at Ihube community along the Okigwe-Enugu Expressway.
The Ihube section of the expressway had been plagued by a wave of terrorism, with frequent incidents of killings and kidnappings of travelers for ransom.
The ex-governor expressed his regret over the tragic incident, referring to the death of the police officer as “unfortunate.” He mentioned that the deceased officer was among the policemen assigned from the State Government House to provide security at the funeral of the mother of the immediate past governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha.
Okorocha said, “I am angry; I am very angry. I am angry because I spent two days in Enugu and nothing happened to me but it is in my own state that the convey released to me by the governor of Enugu State to attend the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother at Mbaise that was attacked and one police man killed.
“What is happening in Imo State makes me angry. Many people who are running to govern Imo State are not capable but I have seen one man who the cap fits. When it is time I will speak.
“The convoy also dropped me at my Spibat masion in Owerri. As they were driving back to Enugu, the convoy was attacked. This is so bad in this Imo state.”
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the ex-governor’s aides disclosed that the convoy’s vehicles, which included a Sports Utility Vehicle, a bus, and a Hilux, were extensively damaged by gunfire.
The aide further revealed that two additional security agents were abducted by the assailants, but fortunately, they were released on the same day.
