BREAKING:NLC SUSPENDS LOOMING STRIKE

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had intended to begin a nationwide indefinite strike on Wednesday, March 29th, to protest the shortage of naira notes across the country.

However, following the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the leaders decided to suspend the strike and instead gave the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) a two-week ultimatum to normalize the money supply nationwide.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, announced that the Federal Government had intervened to prevent the industrial action, and he expressed confidence that the strike would not proceed.

Ngige stated that the NLC’s NEC meeting would focus on reviewing the steps taken by the CBN to alleviate the prolonged cash crunch in the country that has caused difficulties for Nigerians.

To prevent the planned nationwide strike on Wednesday, Ngige and the CBN Governor, Dr. Godwin Emefiele, met with the leadership of the NLC on Monday to resolve their differences.

The NLC had threatened to commence the industrial action if the Federal Government failed to address the cash crunch, fuel scarcity, and electricity tariff hike issues.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Labour Minister said, “At this moment we are no longer talking about whether or not to go on strike. We are only discussing the implementation of the CBN’s response to the whole situation.

“Today, Tuesday March 28, the National Economic Committee of the labour union from states and local government areas will report to the national leadership. And I am positive that they will not continue with the strike planned for Wednesday.
