EndSARS: Brutalised Uber Driver Finally Gets Justice

Adedotun Clement, the Uber driver, who was allegedly attacked, assaulted, and humiliated by officials of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency and the Nigeria Police Force during the first anniversary of EndSARS on October 20,2021, at the Lekki Toll-Gate finally gets justice as court orders a compensation of 5 million naira to be paid by the Lagos State government and the Nigerian police.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday affirmed that the assault on the driver was a violation of of his human right and dignity.

Recall that Clement was assaulted by policemen during the first EndSARS protest  anniversary in October 2021 while he was conveying a passenger from Lagos Island to the mainland part of the state.

He was said to have run into the unrest that followed the disruption of the peaceful protest by security forces at  the Lekki Tollgate.

Policemen and officers of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency were said to have fired tear-gas canisters in a bid  to disperse the peaceful protesters while also arresting many protesters.

By the time he returned to pick up his car, he was Apprehended by security agents of the state who dragged and tortured him.

The assault was however captured on video which went viral on social media didn’t receive a lot of reception by the  people within and without the state .

Clement was said to have abandoned his car like other motorists and ran for his life.

Following public condemnation that trailed the viral incident, a Lagos-based human rights lawyer and activist, Mr Inibehe Effiong, took up the case and sued the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency, the Attorney General of Lagos, and the Nigeria Police on behalf of the Uber driver.

While delivering judgment in the suit on Tuesday, Justice Allagoa insisted that the assault on the Uber driver amounted to a violation of his right to human dignity.

The court awarded the sum of N5m in his favour as damages.
