Ex-Captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, John Mikel Obi, has announced his retirement from professional football after a brilliant career spanning over twenty years.

The Chelsea legend and Super Eagles’ skipper announced this in a statement on Tuesday on his Instagram account.

“There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end”, and for my professional football career, that day is today,” Obi said in the statement.

He further said, “I look back at the past 20 years of my career, and I must say that I am very satisfied with all that I was able to achieve and more importantly the human it has helped shape.”

“This is not goodbye, it’s the start of another journey, another chapter of my life. I look forward to what the future holds and I hope you will walk with me. Thank you,” Obi concluded.

Mikel Obi represented the Nigeria under-20 team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship and won the Silver Ball for the second-best player at the tournament.

The 35-year-old won two Premier League Titles, three FA Cup trophies, the 2007 League Cup, the 2012 UEFA Champions League Cup and the 2013 UEFA Europa League.

Before his retirement, he had won 91 cups for Nigeria and had a bronze medal for the country at the 2016 Olympics.
