FG Makes U-Turn On Re-opening Of Universities

By

The Federal Government has reversed its decision to re-open universities and commence academic activities.

It was gathered that the pressure from some opinion leaders and other stakeholders concerned in resolving the discord between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government led to the government directing that the circular, earlier sent to mandate the reopening of the universities, be withdrawn.

The Acting Director of Public Affairs, the National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr Ayo Haruna, confirmed the withdrawal of the circular dated September 23, 2022.

“After the circular became public and people started interpreting what the consequences could be, it was agreed that the circular is withdrawn to also allow for more negotiation between the government and the union,” a source said.

Earlier, the Director of Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, had signed a circular ordering all vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities to re-open universities.
